Carisoprodol is a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant used for the short-term treatment of acute musculoskeletal pain and discomfort. It is commonly marketed under the brand name Soma and is typically prescribed alongside rest and physical therapy to relieve muscle spasms caused by strains, sprains, or other soft tissue injuries. Carisoprodol works by depressing central nervous system activity, thereby interrupting pain signals between the nerves and the brain. Its active metabolite, meprobamate, contributes to its sedative effects. The usual adult dosage ranges from 250 mg to 350 mg taken three times daily and at bedtime, generally limited to two or three weeks of use. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, and headache. Due to the potential for dependence and misuse, carisoprodol should be taken strictly under medical supervision.
